Versatile wheel twister and celebrated V8 Supercar pilot Cameron McConville will join Gary “Chuckie” Baxter in the Sage Automation / NHP SS Holden V8 Ute on the streets of Adelaide for the “Ten Years of Legends Race” at the Clipsal 500.
“I’m thrilled we can now announce that Cameron has joined us for the series kick off,” says a delighted Baxter, “the experience and versatility that he brings to our operation is enormous. His experiences in open wheel competition even including a one off test drive in an F1 car, Super Tourers and of course his success in V8 Supercars is well documented. Team Manager Andrew Eglinton delighted with the news; it’s a huge shot in the arm for Sage Racing to have him on board.”
McConville too is excited about the possibilities. “I know enough about Gary Baxter through his advanced driving and from commentating his racing in the Utes to know that we’ll be extremely competitive. The Sage Team are very professional and I’m sure we’ll have a great weekend.”
For McConville it’s a faster than expected return to competition around the Clipsal 500 circuit after his retirement from V8 Supercar racing at the end of last season. “To be honest one of the things I’m looking forward to the most from all this is the chance to relax and really enjoy a weekend of racing. I’m still in this to help Sage Racing win the event, don’t get me wrong, but I think I can really enjoy the event without the pressures that V8 Supercar competition brings. V8 Utes are a fun category and I know we’re going to have plenty of fun over the weekend.”
Baxter concurs. “I can totally see where Cam is coming from. The pressures of V8 Supercar racing would be immense and he can now relax a bit and still feed his competitive appetite. This Ten Years of Legends concept is tailor made for him I’d say.”
McConville sees a synergy with the Holden brand also that he’s happy to maintain. “Chucky and the Sage boys run an SS Holden and that’s just fine with me. I’m a Holden man and I’m pleased that I can keep that allegiance alive.”
The Clipsal 500 event is traditionally the Yokohama Australian V8 Ute Series opener and also an affair where the Sage Automation / NHP Team prosper. “Sage Automation and their clients and staff always enjoy a huge turnout at Clipsal in their Corporate Box,” explains Baxter, “and that often spurs us on to some great performances on track. Having someone like Cameron McConville contribute to that success is a major bonus for me personally and our team and sponsors. I can’t wait.”
Gary “Chuckie” Baxter and Cameron McConville will saddle up to share the reigns of the Sage Automation stallion from February 11-14, 2010 but one important question remains…
What about a nickname Mr. McConville?
